ICONIC IKATS
Definition of ikat | \ˈē-ˌkät\
: a fabric in which the yarns have been tie-dyed before weaving
So to make an IKAT fabric , unlike conventional weaving, yarns are first dyed and after handweaved.
To do this, a frame is wrapped with the yarn and the pattern is made by tying off small sections of the yarn with plastic tape that will keep the dye from penetrating at these points. When all the dyes are applied to the IKAT yarns, the threads are sent to the weaving section where it’s tied to a loom and skilfully put together to create the designs.
It needs to imagine the pattern in advance , then to dye the yarns separately and to weave to build that magnificent puzzle.
